Does anyone have a working solution that can alert a user when a message from another user arrives? at present, the number of messages awaiting attention is shown on the left menu navigation bar when the page is refreshed.

Julie posted a general purpose tool for alerts a while back, it was a bit
scrambled into lots of other work, so hard to peel off. I started doing
the peeling (as I have time) last month. Almost have it done.

Note that the the Messages number is updated automatically every 60 seconds without a page refresh:

There is another thread with similar requirement. May be a general purpose library is needed here.
