I currently am having issues with our server and we have a new one.
Old server is:
1. Linux mint 17 Mate (so I believe php5 not php7 --yes?)
2. openEMR v4.2.0 (3)
New server is:
1. Linux Mint 18.0 Cinnamon (so I believe php7)
2. openEMR - latest edition
I have done the backup using the command option under 'administration->create backup' and we have a 3.1 GB file.
I would like to do nothing to the current server and would consider using a bridge server - Linux 17 and v4.2.0 (3) and use backup to restore (which I know how to do). Steps would be appreaciated. My real concern is going from php5 to php 7

Linux Mint 18 prevents the install of 4.2.1 due to the requirement of PHP5 for 4.2.1. Should I install 4.2.1 on a Linux 17.3 machine and restore and then upgrade to Linux MInt 18 and/or 4.2.1 to 4.2.2?
In advance, thank-you for your insight.

Not sure I understand. Is it the .deb install for 4.2.1 that fails on Mint 18, or is it failing after you install? As Stephen mentions, you can install PHP 5.6 on Mint 18 from the "ondrej" repository.
The install for 4.2.1 fails as it needs php5.6. I will install it from the ondrej repository. The question is after that is done, how do I, after restoring the backup, create a backup that will work on php7 on a new server with 4.2.1?

For PHP7 I suggest you wait for 5.0.0 and then upgrade to that. In the meantime you can use PHP 5.6 with 4.2.1 or later. If that doesn't answer your question please be more explicit about what you want to do.
I have the same question. Currently running OpenEMR v5.0.0 (3) on linux Mint 17.3 (php 5) and want to upgrade to Mint 18 (php7). On a test machine running Mint 17.3 with OpenEMR I tried upgrading to Mint 18 using mintupgrade and the new install of Mint 18 stalls on startup.
Would a backed up copy of Openemr on a Mint 17.3 restore properly on the same version of OpenEMR on a Mint 18 machine? If not, what is the recommended way of updating OpenEMR from php5 to php7 on linux machines?

hi M S, you could install php 5.6 and/or wait to upgrade to openemr v5.0 which will work with php 7

I guess then I should be asking the more basic questoin - how do I upgrade the backup from the old server to the new server as listed above?
import the backup on the new server (restore)
http://open-emr.org/wiki/index.php/Backing_Up_Using_the_Built_In_Tools#Recovery
and then upgrade openemr
