At our Cyclify-Austin meeting on Thursday night, we will be announcing the formation of an independent, nonprofit organization called The Cyc Foundation. We have a Webex account for up to 50 people to participate, but I don't think we have audio available on that particular hookup. Do any of you have conference calling that your company would let us use? The call would start at 7:30pm CST. We will try to record the meeting so that we can make a podcast. There will be printed information forthcoming as well. If you can help, please send me an email at joh...@gm.... Thanks, John De Oliveira Cycorp |

======== Course Announcement =========
When: February 27 through March 1, 2006 (3 days)
Where: Cycorp headquarters in Austin, Texas
Total Cost (including lunches): $1,900
This Cyc course will introduce the tools used in Ontological Engineering
and provide ample opportunity to use those tools to begin entering
knowledge into Cyc.
Cyc 101 will be a three-day hands-on workshop with a combination of
lecture and hands-on exercises. The instructors will give a brief
explanation of some aspect of Cyc and then the students will be given
time to apply that knowledge. Our aim is to have students spend as much
time as possible interacting with Cyc. When students leave the class,
they will feel comfortable with how to find and use the tools in
Cyc/OpenCyc, they will have a strong basic understanding of how to find
and make use of relevant KB content, and they will be able to enter
simple facts and rules without assistance.
Even if you have read all of our online documentation, you will still be
able to derive the following benefits from attending this class:
* an opportunity to better understand issues of intent, or why
things are done one way instead of another.
* an opportunity to see the typical uses of the tools that accompany
Cyc/OpenCyc
* an opportunity to interact with full Cyc to get an idea of what
will be appearing in OpenCyc/ResearchCyc in the future
* an opportunity to better understand Cycorp as a company
Information on how to register can be found at:
http://www.cyc.com/cyc/technology/training_dir/register
If you have any questions, please email tra...@cy....
We look forward to seeing you in class!

The prizes ($2500 each) are for best research paper and best proposal involving either OpenCyc (http://www.opencyc.org) or ResearchCyc (http://research.cyc.com) artificial intelligence software. More info is at http://www.opencyc.org/announce/firstCycPrizes. If you'd like to help get the word out, you can "digg" the story at http://digg.com/software/Cyc_Prizes_Offered:_One_month_until_deadline . (You will need to create a free digg account if you don't already have one.) Thanks! John De Oliveira Cycorp P.S. The next version of ResearchCyc, scheduled for late February, will have all of the facts and rules from Full Cyc -- not a subset. The OpenCyc that comes out after that will have all of the terms and all definitional predicates from Full Cyc (but not all assertions and only a few rules). |

I just posted the following on SourceForge:
I just got news that we're having a problem in the very last step =
of preparing the build for our v0.6 beta distribution. I'm going to push =
the estimated release date to Wednesday, April 3.=20
The programmers and ontologists within Cycorp put in a lot of =
overtime this past week trying to make this happen, so they are as =
disappointed as anyone. We are very close. We have a code "chill" and a =
KB freeze, and the internal build is passing all of the major tests. But =
we've got to get past this last step, and its going to take some work by =
one of our experts.=20
We appreciate your patience. We are so close.=20
John D.=20
Cycorp=20
P.S. Remember, this first release will be for Linux only. It's =
about a 50MB download, and it expands to about 250MB. If anyone would =
like to provide an anonymous ftp mirror for the download, please email =
me at jo...@cy.... Thanks. =20
