Basically, I agree with you on this one. A few top quality applications
are probably the way to start.

The other possibility is to use a two tier install. Perhaps after all
the end user applications have been installed, the installer can present
a dialogue that reads something like this:

"Do you want to install any compilers or interpreters?"

and

"Would you like to install any network tools?"

Just a thought.
