Shooting straight down, odds are only 60% that image captured will have the intended orientation.
Preferring it to just be correct rather than fixing it in software later, I'll often delete and retake, but it's frustrating to have to do so, sometimes more than once.
Current orientation is shown in the orientation of the controls and the button to switch from camera to video, but it appears that something is overriding that and changing orientation due to very fine changes from perfectly level (camera pointing down).
Related and almost equally frustrating, is what it takes to change orientation:
When in landscape orientation, it takes about 27° rotation from perfectly flat (pointing down) to portrait aimed at the horizon, before orientation changes from landscape to portrait. However, doing the reverse: it takes 50° rotation from pointing down to aimed at the horizon in landscape before the OpenCamera indicators will recognize and switch to landscape.
With the observed triggers at 27° and 50°, it should be nearly impossible to shoot straight down and get output different from intended, but somehow it happens for me frequently.
Attached image is both a screen capture from the phone, intending to copy a document in portrait mode, and the resulting landscape image. I was very careful to watch the orientation indicators as I released the shutter to be certain it didn't change at the last minute... and how could it? When I'm trying, it takes either 27° or 50° to get it to change.
