I'm trying to set mine up to take a picture every hour. It works but only if I have the "Keep display on" checked in the "On screen GUI" section. If I disable "Keep display on", it doesn't take any pictures. I'd rather not keep the display on, since this is quite a power drain. Or is theire something else I need to set?

sadly i have the same issue - this would be a great feature, if it were possible to have the display off amd the opencamera app continue to take pictures at regular intervals!

Unfortunately this isn't straightforward on Android since the screen being off means applications are paused/asleep and means having the camera/application run as a background service, this isn't supported by Open Camera I'm afraid.
