I can not find anything about this, but when I try to take a photo if there is even the tiniest movement of the phone it will not take a picture until the phone is at rest. This has made me miss way too many photos, aside from this one thing this is by far the best camera app I have used.

Has this been solved? It is super annoying that the app won't just take a picture if there is any movement.

Open Camera does not have such functionality, so the question is irrelevant. Maybe you are using some rip off app that is based on the Open Camera source code.

Does using a different focus mode help (see second row of icons on the popup menu)? E.g., try AF instead of continuous?

    Mark, Thank you!
I thought I had tried everything with it but setting the focus to manual lets it take a picture when I hit the button.
It looks like the problem I am having is that it is trying to focus and won't take a picture if it isn't focused.

In that case I guess the question becomes is there a way to make it less strict about the focus?

Either way thank you so much, this has been bothering me for way too long and knowing what is going on at least lets me know what to expect.

It sounds that something is not ok in your phone, like a loose lens or such, behaviour as described in the opening message is not normal.

In manual mode, when lens to subject distance is short, you need use the focus slider to set the focus properly, else the image will be out of focus, so useless. The infinite focus mode is quite usable, except for subjects at close proximity. What was the focus mode that you find problematic? Have you tried the continuous focus mode (the last icon on the right hand side), it is generally very good (but there is no possibility to choose the focus seeking area, it is always at the centre).

"is there a way to make it less strict about the focus?"

Obviously there are myriad ways to damage the photos. But only one way to make them proper/good, I trust that it will not be taken away. Perhaps you are using a DSLR as a baseline for expectations, they are way way above the performance of smartphone cameras, in all aspects.

I confirm the issue, going back to years ago already. I installed the app from F-Droid. I had these issues on the Fairphone 2, Android 8 and now Fairphone 4. So clearly not related to hardware. The app just refuses to take the picture if things are moving (some scenarios) or blinking (most scenarios). A good testcase I found is to try to take a picture of a blinking car turn indicator in the evening. I tried for minutes but it refuses to take the picture. I really would like to just force it in those scenarios. This single issue is the reason why I keep going back to the built-in camera app, it isn't reliable for me.
