That is not true: open camera supports USB audio quite well (I actually use USB guitar interface, but that's essentially a microphone).
EDIT: I use galaxy s7 which supports "samsung professional audio" so it might be that it does not work on all android devices.
My question to the developer is if there could be an option to control the volume of external audio input?

Is it possible to add a USB+MIC icon on the screen when the app uses an external USB MIC? When its connected there is no way to tell what MIC it is using as the option lets you use it if it only finds a USB MIC. This will ensure the user that the app actualy using the USB MIC.

Just in case, for Open Camera 1.45.2 go to
Settings (cog icon) --> Video settings --> Audio source
and select "External mic (if present)"
