Default app selection not working correctly under A11

I am using Open Camera (OC) as my default camera app. After resolving the problems I had been having with OC, I wanted to it as the default app to open when I double-click the power button.

This used to work fine under A10. However, under A11, the double-click will work as it used to (opens the app, ready to take a photo) BUT only if the phone is unlocked. If the phone is locked, the double-click will flash the lock icon at the top of the lock screen but will not show the app. I have to use the fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone first. Then the OC app will be there and open.

This is obviously not very helpful, especially if I want to grab a quick shot.

I have tried dropping the OC default assignment, rebooting the phone and reestablishing it but this has not helped.

Does anyone else here have a Pixel phone (preferably a 3XL) running A11 that could test this function also?

    All I hear is crickets!

Doesn't ANYONE use the Android default action for opening OC?

Some updated info. Google made a change to Android 11 with the Nov 2020 patch release. Now seems to work as it used to (Once OC is open via the double-click power button, it will not only open whenever I hit just the power button or the FP button but is also seeming to open just by lifting my phone, which I am not sure if I want. I think this uses more battery power.

Sorry for the delay, and thanks for the update. The "double power button" behaviour and whether it requires the device to be unlocked depends on the device (some devices will only open the stock camera for example).

Really? I thought this was Android OS functionality? Or is it something that only works on Pixels?

Some other devices support this behaviour, but not all of them (possibly it is part of stock Android but some manufacturers modify that? Or maybe it's not part of stock Android, I'm not sure).
