I have the same problem/question! Why did this never get a reply?
If there isn't any way to change this, can you take a suggestion to offer an option to move the icon into the sides or top bar where it will be out of the way? I rarely use video.

I guess one question I have is, is this different to other camera apps - e.g., Google Camera has the video icon very close to the shutter button. I'm unclear if this is "it might be true of other cameras, but it's still annoying" or rather that there's something wrong in Open Camera (possibly specific to a particular screen size etc).

Google no longer shows the video camera selection in a circle (thankfully!) because it is too easy to click on inadvertenly if you can't see the screen (or see it well). So instead of getting a photo, you either get nothing or you start a video instead.
Now in GC, to enable video, you have to slide and touch "video", then you have to press the start button.
Something like this is what I am thinking of or else, as I suggested, move the video selection icon to the control bar area (like say the horizontal correct triangle icon you use).

How do I get the video icon off the interface screen. It's too close to the camera icon, and constantly turning on when I'm shooting stills.
