Firstly I'd like to send a very big and sincere thank you for creating and maintaining Open Camera. I have been using it as my primary camera app for a very long time now (at least 8 years!) and I can say that it is a most excellent piece of software: Very reliable and flexible, and I have enjoyed seeing new features added to it over the years. It's light-years ahead of any other open source camera app I've seen. Thank you so much!
I'm writing today because I have a feature that I'd really like to see added. Hopefully it's one that shouldn't be too difficult to implement, since what Open Camera already has is very close: I would like the ability to set up a shortcut to start open camera, and instantly start recording video without any further interaction.
I am using a Unihertz Titan, which has a physical keyboard and the ability to assign shortcuts to keys on the keyboard. This includes any shortcut defined by any application. For Open Camera, one of the options available is "Record Video", see the attached screenshot.
This "Record Video" shortcut almost does what I want: It starts Open Camera in video recording mode, but I still have to press the record button to begin recording. What I would like is to be able to assign a shortcut to instantly start recording video with no further interaction. I'd suggest adding another similar shortcut called something like "begin recording video" (or maybe "instant video recording")
I see that there's a "Take Picture" widget which I can add to my homescreen, but no corresponding "start video recording" widget (and also note that there's no "take picture" shortcut in my screenshot. I think that would be handy, too, but not as important as an instant video recording option I'm requesting)
The reason I would like this feature is something that I think (unfortuantely) a lot of people might appreciate, and which might help to improve people's safety: I am currently being followed, harassed, and threatened by someone on a semi-regular basis, and I want to be able to quickly and easily record video evidence of these incidents very quickly and with a minimum of interaction with my device: i.e one button press -> video is now recording.
The current setup I have using the "Record video" shortcut is a good start, but it takes an extra second or two to hit that 'record' button, and that could make all the difference in a tense/violent situation like the ones I've been experiencing.
(Without direct evidence of the incidents my local police are unwilling to do anything about it - it seems they're content to wait until after I've been assaulted before taking any action)
Bonus points for also adding an option to allow video recording to continue after I've switched the screen off, so that I can easily record longer-duration videos of these incidents without having my screen on. (Though I realise that's a second and very different feature request).
Thanks very much for your time, and once again for your excellent software.
