I've been using Open Camera on a Pixel 3A camera, and I was able to record 4K videos (2840x2160).

    Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtlfOYtoSNQ

That phone was stolen, and I replaced it with a Galaxy A23 that advertises 50p resolution. However, it seems that the best resolution I can get with this new phone is 1920x1080.

Is there any way to get better resolution with the A23?

Can you recommend any other camera apps or phones that would give me the better resolution?

    Thanks.

The large ~40+ mega pixel resolutions are typically quad bayer resolutions - unless you have a specific need for that, it's normal for these to be pixel binned to more regular resolutions. Also most devices don't seem to be exposing these resolutions to third party applications.

But I'm not aware of this being possible for video. https://www.phonearena.com/phones/Samsung-Galaxy-A23_id11887 suggests max for video is FullHD?

      Many thanks, Mark.

I'm not familiar with those terms, but I think you're saying that when I use Open Camera to record video at 1920x1080 on the A23, I may actually be getting just as good resolution or quality as I was with the Pixel 3a at 3840x2160.

      Is that about right?

I mean that most people shouldn't need to worry about getting 50MP on the resultant photos.

But as for video - the Galaxy A23 does have a lower max resolution than the Pixel 3a. Which is better for quality in general will depend on various factors (e.g. for DXO's reviews, see https://www.dxomark.com/smartphones/Samsung/Galaxy-A23-5G vs https://www.dxomark.com/google-pixel-3a-camera-review/ ).

Qualcomm says officially that “1080p60 video capture” on this processor.
I myself have a Moto G32, with the same processor (different camera sensor) and when we set the camera api 2 - it is possible to set a resolution of 2320x1740, but already with the number of frames per second is different floats and is not very smooth, with the recorded video.
So maybe you need to slightly experiment with the settings and you will achieve something more.

I tried it out today, and it wasn't as good as the Pixel 3a:

Rather, the pixel level you will not reach anyway.

How about what Video settings you have, do you have a standard setting?

    Did you increase the Bitrate?

Can you explain a out not reaching the pixel level? You'll note from the video I posted that I zoom in a lot (optically).

I'm pretty sure I used standard settings.

It was about the quality of the recording, the first is to set yourself the Camera Interface (Camera API) to Camera2 API.

And after that you should have options to set a higher video resolution.

But you also want to theoretically improve the quality of the recording - Bitrate of the videos (approximate) and just raise it 20Mbps and up.

But that's something you'll have to check for yourself. It's hard to recommend something if you don't have physically the same thing and haven't tested it, I myself own several smartphones and not on all of them the same settings are good.

You simply have to check for yourself.
