I had selected a few files to delete, but then found that EVERYTHING was deleted.
I performed the delete with my Pixel 4a Android connected to the computer via USB C, in file explorer (DCIM/Open Camera).

Now the entire FOLDER (Open Camera) is gone.

When the folder that is specified in 'Open Camera' as the destination folder is deleted/renamed/moved, then 'Open Camera' still takes a photo, then tries to save it, but finds out that the destination folder is not there, therefore shows the error message "unable to save the photo" to the user. Perfectly logical. The error message is visible only a shot duration of time, has no screaming color, and goes away automatically. So the user may continue taking several photos until the error message finally catches the eye. However, vanishing destination folder it is a very very rare occasion.

A folder that vanish, with or without the intention/affect of the user, is not an issue of 'Open Camera' app. There is no 'Recycle Bin' in Android, some recovery app may or may not offer some help. A for the gallery app I warmly recommend the 'Simple Gallery Pro' by 'Simple Mobile Tools', available at 'f-droid.org', it has an internal 'Recycle Bin'. And it is the perfect companion to the 'Open Camera' as it allows clipping, scaling, flipping and such editing operations, as well as cut, copy, move, rename and such file management operations. Similarly like the 'Open Camera', the 'Simple Gallery Pro' is a safe app, they do not require potentially unsafe permissions such as network related permissions, and are honest freeware as they do not disturb with ads nor spy on any information of the user or device. Tho', both do accept donations, also warmly recommended.

This depends on the method used to delete them (and not up to Open Camera). I'm not sure if deleting via computer (e.g. connecting via MTP) even supports a "recycle bin" to allow restoring. As the other reply notes, using an Android gallery application may be safer as many of these have a recycle bin.
