As far as I know this isn't possible with Android API currently - I think the only possibility is to experiment with different audio inputs (Settings/Video settings/Audio source).

Yeah. This is a real problem.
When I have my Samsung a12¹ set to camcorder audio, it is all too loud and distorts on peaks. but when I have it set to unprocessed it barely tickles the meter at all and the captured audio is just barely audible. and, of course, setting it to optimize for voice calls means it is totally garbled
No happy medium!
¹ The Samsung is a piece of garbage, to be sure. (unrelated to this problem, it is almost unusual because it cannot hold a Wi-Fi connection to save its worthless life, and even when connected can not do better than two and a half megabit per second on average and usually considerably less. Piece of garbage.)

Audio gain control would be great....audio recorder RecForge Pro has AGC disable, and a level control slider pops up on main screen.
My new A22 5g has a weird audio distortion going on on audio and video recordings- not signal overload but a muffled sound - the manual level control fixes it so it must be an agc issue.
I've heard it described as 'underwater effect'. Open Camera set to 'optimised for voice recognition' improves the sound...best I've tried do far among many.
