Any chance of having the monochrome camera only mode unlocked (if it is actually possible) for the Honor 8?

Open Camera doesn't have a monochrome mode - it does support "color effects" which are offered by the device (press the three-dots icon and scroll down), which may include a mono mode.

That's not what I'm looking for. The honor 8 has two cameras, one colour and one for monochrome only. But the monochrome sensor is software locked by Huawei. What I was wondering, was if Open Camera in the future could come to unlock that feature.

The picture quality when shooting with the monochrome sensor only is better, that's why I'm asking.

To follow up on this, Open Camera doesn't currently have a monochrome mode but we're open to contributing to one.

The Honor 8 has the exact same hardware as the P9 which supports shooting true monochrome with the B&W sensor. Huawei flags it as incompatible though.

The broader discussion is how Open Camera will handle dual sensor cameras moving forward. Ideally it will simply let you choose which sensor to use.

    Hello,

I allow myself to revive this old thread by adding a possibly useful ressource.
These are the (open) sources of an android camera app (FreeDCam) that succeeds in accessing Honor 8 monochrome sensor and can capture in RAW. Maybe its methods to do so is useful ?

Thanks for the link. As far as I can tell, FreeDcam attempts to open a large number of possible camera IDs, rather than using the usual API to ask what cameras there are. So there might be some devices that don't admit to some cameras, even though they'll still work if that ID is requested.

Potentially I could do something similar but I'm wary of just doing this for all devices - there's the risk of exposing cameras that are buggy for third party applications (maybe they're block for a reason) or otherwise aren't meant to be exposed. But potentially this could be done on a device specific basis...

      Yes! :-)
Here a link to a Honor 8 monochrome sensor raw file, taken with FreeDCam :

At first I had doubts, but I tested it by alternately masking the front lenses of the camera and... it worked... The picture comes from the right sensor!

Yes, you're right and I forgot to mention that : the file contains some corrupted data... It's not that important because the full sensor frame is present PLUS the garbage... so you can crop the garbage out without losing actual data...
I used a regular FreeDCam version, available on the PlayStore...
