Hi,
I tried to set the storage path of open camera to my external SD card (256GB) of my Huawei P30 device, Android10, and for that I tried a lot of things. Under "more camera settings" I couldn't switch the directory to external SD directly, so I activated "use storage access framework". I selected a folder and confirmed the folder choice and then I agreed the following request for admittance. So far no visible Problems with that.
But taking a photo always leads to an error message, saying that the photo could not be saved. An empty file of 0 bytes is stored with each take of a snapshot, to be found in the diectory of my choice on the SD card.
I deleted the cache data of Open Camera, then the app data and I restarted the phone to make the path choice again. No difference.
I went to my phones' developer settings and activated use of external memory for apps. No difference. Switching back the last change and maybe also deleting cache again (can't remember exactly) and after restart suddenly I found a situation, where it worked - yeah! I was even able to use the same storage directory with both of my camera apps. BUT THEN: I wanted to make sure that it would not cause me similar trouble later on again under real use, so I rebooted my device once again to see, if it would still be working afterwards. Regretfully it doesn't and all trials I made after that were not good enough to get back to the point of function.
Photos cannot be saved unless I choose a storage location on the internal memory - which I definitively don't want.
Does anyone have an Idea how to get it back running. It was working once, so it must be possible...
Thanks for any hint.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure why this is I'm afraid. Just to be sure, do other camera apps save to the external SD card okay?
Not sure if this is a device specific issue, maybe someone else can comment if this works on a Huawei P30 (SD cards works okay on my devices but I don't have any Huaweis to test with).

Thanks Mark. Yes, other apps including the Huawei *Kamera" (it's a German version) work well without issues, regardless if I select internal or external memory.
As I said, for a short while I was even able to let both camera apps store their pics in the same directory on the sd card, storage/0000-0000/DCIM/Camera. One picture after the other, of couse, I'm not using two apps at a time ;-). But as mentioned before, it was woking well first. And also I've got no problems to read or write on the SD, e.g. Total Commander works great after I only one time had to permit SD access.

Hi again.
After many trials I got back to a situation, where it worked again. This happend after I moved some of the photo folders back and forth between internal memory and SD card. I maybe could have stayed with this and I assume that it could also have worked a longer time in case, but I want to be sure that I can reproduce this state at any time after reboot without hours of trying. So I rebooted my P30 and guess what: I could not reproduce my last way of getting there afterwards again, even if I believe that remembered very well how I did it before. That's disappointing.
Can anyone tell me, why the folder rights are different comparing internal and SD folders and why it is not possible to admit write permission for GROUP and for WORLD (Total Commander). However, this might not nessessarily have anything to do with my problem, since it's the same also for other folders on the SD and all other apps don't have a prob with it.
Thanks for any idea how to get closer to the reasons for that strange behaviour.

Funy, it came back from alone!
Doing nothing for a night brought back the access to the folder on the SD card all alone.
Has anyone an idea what could have been the reason? Maybeva background process had to be finished first after reboot? The only process on a device which I know which lasts longer than a few seconds woud be the media scanner. Other Ideas?

I think it confuses Open camera if you change the access right back and forth between diffenent folders, even if on the same SD. It can happen that new taken photos aren't shown in the app's gallery window, where instead older photos are displayed (also when you push the gallery button in the app. Or they are shown just after minutes.
I stopped all apps, also phones' gallery app and photo app, deleted all caches, then deleted the access rights for the storage an set them again but on only one folder (and not changed it anymore).
Now it works like it shoud. This could be a bug in Open Camera.
However, I still have no clue why this SD storage inhibition occurs for hours after the reboot.

@Mark: Still it is quite a mess to get Open Camera after every reboot. Don't you have an idea where to search the problem?

Still more interesting effects: Now storage of photos has been working for a few days (without reboot) but there is another strange issue: Deleting photos from the reviewer (it's called "Fotos" and was preselected) lets the photos disappear in the open camera review window for half a minute and they come back from alone.
Checking deeper with Total Commander lets see, that the photos an not at all deleted (refreshing Total Commander window immediately of course), i.e. only the thumbnails of the photos seem to be deleted temporarily.
What a strange thing...
BTW: Does anyone know if an SD card's name is allowed to be "0000-0000" ?
And why Total commander is able to search through subdirectories under "/storage" but not anymore (like under former Android versions) finds files in subdirs under "/" ? Is this specific for Android10 or is it maybe an indication for SD card problems?

HELP Please!
It's so disappointing that it can work only sometimes and next time when I'm trying to make a great snapshot I get this damned error message that the photo wasn't saved. I'm close to delete Open Camera from my device, even if it's the world's best App that I'm knowing... :-((
If you would like to refer to this comment somewhere else in this project, copy and paste the following link:
Is this using Settings/More camera controls/"Use Storage Access Framework" enabled? (This is required to save to external SD card.)
And is this something that sometimes saves the photo successfully, but other times doesn't, seemingly at random?
I did recently discover a bug where with Storage Access Framework photos sometimes failed on some devices, this is fixed for the next version. I don't think this is the cause of problems where the photo never saves though.

Storage access framework is allways needed, otherwise I get no any access to the card.
It is not like working, not working and working again from one photo to another. When it isn't working, it isn't working and it stays not working. To get it working it usually needs to activate storage to internal memor. Then move the previously defined storage folder by help of a file browser (Total Commander) to the SD card and select the new destination in Open Camera (using storage access framework) Then need to wait some time, minutes, hours, half a day. Suddenly it works and stays working, many times after each other, with no exceptions .
Only last time it happened, that it stopped working after two days. And it stayed not working.
I couldn't exclude that there could be an influence given by mode switches between Wifi and GSM networks, some indication for that seems to be given. However, be informed that I'm not using cloud storage, cloud backup or comparable things which require cloud or internet access.

Hi, I encounter exactly the same issues with my Nokia 7.1. Even though the photos are saved to the same folder as ones taken with the Nokia-camera (which are shown on GooglePhotos without any issues).
It seems that some sort of "hidden tag" is at play that hinders GooglePhotos to interpret the photos as ones to show up on GooglePhotos. Btw, I had a longer conversation with the Google support but they did not encounter any known solution to that issue.
Besides I tried in both camera API-modes for which it worked sporadingly but then stops completely.

Hi, happy New Year!
Let me give a further feedback: The delay to access on the SD card which needs to be considered afer every reboot has dropped to some minutes at the moment, which - if this should stay constant - would be still acceptable. However, there is a new issue on hand now after update on the latest version. Using the button for showing the latest picture brings makes it visible, like it should be, but trying to delete a photo here returns an error message saying that you have to use the gallery app for deleting. This is not acceptable.
BTW, I recognized that Open Camera does NOT have app rights assigned to "STORAGE" access (=photos, media and files). In the rights menue I also can't see any other app which could be seen in connetion with open camera like e.g. "Storage Access Framework" or other.
@Mark
I've got no idea about programming android apps, isn't "storage access" right required for Open Camera? Even the "Kamera" App from Huawei uses this right.
If you would like to refer to this comment somewhere else in this project, copy and paste the following link:
Sorry for the delay. For the storage access request, this is no longer relevant on Android 10+ once an application has been updated to support "scoped storage" (something Google introduced in Android 10 - existing applications might not be supporting it, but it's required now in order to release updates on Google Play).
Total Commander will work on Android 10+ because it requests permission for "all files" - this is something different to older Android versions, it maintains the file access that was possible on older Android versions, but Google Play only allows file managers to use it.
Sorry for not answering the above, I'm not really sure why there are problems in saving to SD card, I don't have any devices that reproduce such problems.

Update/solution:
The issue of not being able to delete photos in the "viewer" was related to the app "Google Fotos". After installing an update of Google Fotos I was asked to grant SD card rights and now deletion works :-).
Even after uninstalling the Google Fotos update it still stays working, so this issue was possibly related to the fact, that Google Fotos was pre-installed on the mobile device. Maybe it would have been sufficient to reset the default value of the Foto app (but I can't check this anymore).

Have you changed the SD card? Every time the SD card is changed the permissions must be granted again (from every app hat access the SD). This annoyance was not there in OS 6.0.
My understanding is that 'Storage Access Framework' setting in Open Camera has to be ON, and under recent OS versions the folder has to be under the path 'SD/DCIM'

No, the card has not been changed and yes, Storage Framework Access is on (otherwise no storage ever will be possible). The path is DCIM, or more precisely it is:
/storage/0000-0000/DCIM

Hi, I have a Fairphone 2 running LineageOS 17.1 and I have the same issue with Open Camera saving pictures to the external SD card.
I anbled the "use Storage access framework" and selected a folder on the sd card.
I could reproduce it, that the first picture after starting Open Camera is always NOT saved. All subsequent pictures are saved.
What I experience, is that the file is actual there, when I expect the file system on the sd card, however the file cannot be watched with any galery app. It simply does not show up. However all further pictures except the first can be seen with the galery app.
