though android 4.x. doesnt support for adjustable focus or focal distance., can you atleast have any control over setting focus at the nearest point possible., for macro shots.
it'd be really great if you can find out something in android 4.x that helps us take macro shots., all we need is just that there's a control over focal distance., or atleast a single button to set the focus strictly to the nearest possible distance.
I've observed that the app focuses at its nearest possible point, when there's a textured surface with enough lighting (for eg. this screen's black text on white on a laptop screen) right in front of the camera, anywhere roughly at a distance lesser than what the camera can actually focus exactly on.
thanks in advance

Hi Mark, I am working on a phone camera microscope. I am having trouble getting the phone to recognize the desired focal plane. It seems to go through the desired setting as it goes through its focusing procedure, but settles on something just a little off. Images are clear enough of large objects but when I try to zoom in after the fact, say on a red blood cell, I am getting nothing but a red blur. Manual focus would be an acceptable workaround. I think I have read most of the FAQs on this and get the feeling that what I want cannot be done on my Galaxy S3. If you can verify this I will move on to another platform

I do have the camera2 API enabled (I'm pretty sure - it's toggled and RAW saving is available) but I can't find the focus controls anywhere. Can anyone do screenshots showing the settings and functionality?

I can't focus on transparent screens so I need to have true manual focus on a slider in macro mode.
Nobody else does it. Can you?
I have a Galaxy S5 with Android 4.4

I'm working on adding support for Android 5 which I think has support for true manual focus as you describe. This won't be possible in Android 4.x.

Unfortunately manual focus isn't possible in Android 4.x. Note that if the device supports macro focus, this is offered as one of the focus modes.

Would it be possbile to have a < and > button to move focus rather than just a slider please? Incremental focus moving would be useful!
I've added this to my todo.

Manual focus is available if camera 2 API can be enabled (under settings), but I suspect the Galaxy S3 is too old for this.

Motorola Moto G3, in the focus modes there's focus lock, infinity, auto, continuous, but no macro. My phone doesn't support macro focus?
Probably not, Open Camera shows whatever focus modes that are available.

I have a Samsung S5 and still dont have the option to enable camera2 API. Is this a device issue?
The S5 is also probably too old (it was released before Camera2 API appeared - so even with Android 5 it won't have the necessary drivers).
