I think PowerManager is more for keeping the screen on (which Open Camera already does). Running in the background is on the todo, though unfortunately this is far not straightforward, it needs Open Camera to run as a service.

Google has been kind enough to improve the user experience in such way that recording apps that did work OK in the background in Android OS version 7 and earlier, no longer can not do so. In addition Google has made the task of writing such an app quite a tough task, and in addition if you manage to overcome those improvements a' la Google, Google will kick the app out of the play store.
Having said that, perhaps an option to automatically or easily dim & de-dim the display, for the purpose of conserving the battery juice during long a duration footage such as dashcam, or time-lapse, etc sessions, would be very useful. Perhaps that could be tolerated by Google.

WTF google. Just let us choose...
Developers should make 2 versions:
1. a new world order loyal version for the google store
2. a self-determined and customfriendly app for aptoide, etc.

Is it possible to use Open Camera in background? When I close the screen (from power button or by closing the phone's case), the app stops recording.
There are some non-free apps that can run in the background, but would be great to have this possibility in a free app too.
This Android documentation could be helpful: https://developer.android.com/reference/android/os/PowerManager.html
