Hi, QR scanners are already ready and in use, e.g.: https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.secuso.privacyFriendlyCodeScanner/

Of course. You can use Open Camera for taking photos and videos, and a QR scanner for reading QR codes, most of them also read barcodes.

Can I scan the QR code with the open camera app? Not two apps

When you have an app open that scans QR codes, sure you can. I do not know if you can, or can't, scan two apps.

Good question, will QR scanning be a built in function in Open Camera?

i too would like to be able to use the Open Camera app for reading QR codes. Like, show the url and offer a link to the site that hides behind the QR code. Inside Open Camera app. No seperate app. It should be a feature inside Open Camera app. Got it, "anonymous"? Thanks :)

All my friends with ipHones scan QR with their default camera app. No mucking about with separate QR app Needed. I wanna do that too!

Note that many Android phones also have QR code scanning in the default camera application. The debate is whether to add it to Open Camera as a third party application - I see the pros to it, but it also bloats the application for something most people already have.

You're right. I do already have an app that scans QR codes. It's my DEFAULT CAMERA APP.

So by your own logic, I should uninstall your app because I already have an app that handles taking photos.

Thanks for the advice. Uninstalling your app right now :)

The opencamera fork by the e.foundation has a QR scanner included. Here is the link to the code:

I think QR codes are a great way to quickly and easily access information. They're like digital shortcuts that can take you straight to a website or a specific piece of information. And with a QR scanner, it's so convenient!
I personally love using QR codes, and I'm a big fan of the Smart Engines SDK. They offer top-notch QR scanning capabilities, and it's been a game-changer for me when it comes to scanning codes quickly and accurately. Whether you're using it for personal or professional use, it's a great tool to have in your toolkit.

There's some free QR code scanners available in the internet.

Can highly recommend the cognex barcode app.
Essentially an ad-by-example, but the thing scans everything.
    Free, no ads, etc.
Perhaps a method/button that takes an image, then launches another app pointed at the file.

"Note that many Android phones also have QR code scanning in the default camera application."

We don't want two apps for this purpose. That's the point.

The stock camera app that you want us to replace has the ability to scan QR codes.

If your logic is to avoid features because the stock camera already has them, then why did you make an app that takes photos? The stock camera already does that too.

But since you want me to open the default camera to handle basic camera functionality, I'll just uninstall your app and use the stock camera as you suggested. Thanks!

Are people making this conversation complicated on purpose? Users are asking for the OpenCamera app to have the QR scanning function added to the OpenCamera app so that users don't have to use two separate camera apps. QR codes are a very popular way for businesses to provide info to customers, to the degree that QR codes are integrated into most other camera apps, including the default camera app on Androids and Iphones. Also, after Covid MANY restaurants began providing menus through QR codes. Its basically an essential need for camera apps in 2024. So I dont think the argument that QR codes aren't used by many people is valid, and I dont see how it bloats the app when there are tons of other settings and functionality that isn't touched by most users. Is there an actual legitimate reason why QR scanning isnt included in the OpenCamera app? Recommending users to use a different app for QR scanning seems to defeat the purpose of trying to get users to replace their default camera with OpenCamera. Meaning, its not really a sound business decision.

Adding QR code scanning to OpenCamera would be feature creep. Not good for most people.

Many QR code scanning apps also have a history feature that lets you see/manage a list of your previously scanned QR/bar codes. Which is quite handy in my opinion.
But implementing such a scan history in OpenCamera would add functionality that's pretty unrelated to taking photos.

There's a reason not every functionality you can think of with a camera is actually implemented in one "camera" app. Because it would become a clunky to use app with too many UI elements.

In my opinion it's MUCH better to have several apps that each can do one thing really well, than one app that tries to integrate many things resulting in each of them being implemented less well.

Adding on to say that (regardless of feature creep) I would really like to have a QR scanner built-in. I would like to replace the default camera app entirely, but from UX perspective it doesn't make sense without a QR scanner.

As a user, this is my desired workflow when it comes to QR codes.
    - I see a QR code somewhere and want to scan it.
    - Since my camera app of choice is accessible from the lock screen, open it directly.
    - Unlock my phone.
    - Scan the QR code.

If I set OpenCamera as my lock screen camera app (only 2 slots here, so not reasonable to have a camera and a scanner app), my workflow turns into:
    - I see a QR code somewhere and want to scan it.
    - Unlock my phone.
    - Find the folder I dropped my QR scanner in.
    - Open the QR scanner.
    - Scan the QR code.

It's a small change to workflow but it's annoying enough that I don't want to use OpenCamera as my lockscreen camera. Note that the functionality I'm interested in (and, I suspect, the other folks asking for this feature are interested in) is just a basic scanner, not any sort of scan history.

Is it an additional feature? Sure. But QR scanning is baked into basically every other camera app around, and the average user doesn't want to juggle multiple camera apps. If you want OpenCamera to remain a specialty camera app, that's fine. If you want it to support everyday use as a default camera app, adding QR scanning seems prudent.
