JPEG XL is a modern replacement to every standard image format, including PNG for lossless, JPG for lossy, and even GIF and APNG for animation. It is superior for both lossless and lossy images when compared to the competition, with few exceptions.

Support for JPEG XL has exploded despite it being created in only 2019 and standardised in 2022. A non-exhaustive list of software supporting JPEG XL (JXL) images is as follows:

  • ffmpeg
  • MPV
  • GIMP
  • Krita
  • ImageMagick
  • GraphicsMagick
  • tinydng
  • Photoshop
  • Image Toolbox
  • Safari
  • Chromium (behind flag)
  • Firefox (behind flag)

It would be nice to be able to export photographs as JXL files in both lossless and lossy modes, while keeping support for optional RAW (DNG) support; JXL works alongside RAW as part of its featureset.
