I use my phone to record my son's soccer matches that last about 60 to 80 minutes. As I'm just trying to capture his goals / good plays, I don't look at the phone screen often while recording.

Having the screen on, with the video on, and with the camera recording, drains my battery quite rapidly. My phone sometimes tells me that it cannot record video anymore since the phone is too hot because the screen is on for too long in video mode and/or the sun is shinning on the phone at the same time.

It would be great to be able to record with the screen off to save battery and to create less heat.

Some ideas (please feel free to ignore them all).

If the screen were off while recording,:

    • Perhaps the status light could blink rapidly to indicate recording.
    • One of the side buttons could start/stop recording, or could reactivate the screen so that the user could gain quick access to the controls.
    • The screen could turn back on every 15 / 30 seconds and then turn off again after a second or two to remind user that the video is being recorded.

If the screen couldn't be turned fully off:

    • Display a blank/black screen with the camera controls at the regular brightness.
    • Display the video very dark, but have the camera controls at the regular brightness.
    • Display the video very small, thumbnail size, but have the controls the regular size and brightness.

Thank you for spending your time and effort to develop the Open Camera application.

    @moojin:
you have some great ideas. Thanks for sharing!

there is obviously interest in this feature. As moojin says, recording video with the screen on drains the battery down real fast. There really is no need for it.

Will the developer be paying attention to our requests for this feature? It probably would not be difficult to implement as all it is is turning the screen of or blanking the screen with a small status indicator on. Also the

It is important for saving battery while recording with the camera in a fixed position.

When we record ourselves dancing salsa, we place the phone where it can see us and no one looks at the screen while it is recording.

    I WOULD LOVE THIS FEATURE

Would be definitely a great feature, no other app supports this, currently.

Why has this feature not been implemented yet??? In the grand programming scheme of things, this would be a very simple feature to add. Double tapping the screen could turn the screen back on. Or a small indicator light. The screen drains the battery more than anything!!!

+1 here too, in addition to the power drain the fullscreen view is far too distracting if I'm recording incidentally but actually am there to watch what I'm recording, like an open-air performance.

Another nice feature would be to not show the recorded video fullscreen. Instead I'd like just a small image to control that I still film the correct scene instead of cutting off the performers' heads, but which would not be so distracting that I look at the camera view the whole time instead of at reality. :-/

btw, when simulating the webcam feature by turning off all camera controls to have "clean HDMI" out and minimizing screen brighness, I am running into a killer flaw: I found no way to access the settings anymore....now I am stuck with clean HDMI...as they say: be careful what you wish for...:-)

Sadly this is not anywhere near as simple as it sounds - on Android, the screen being off means all applications are put into the background ("paused") state. Whilst it is possible to record video in the background, it does require a significant rework. Also I worry that Google has been increasingly limiting what applications can do in background for privacy reasons (e.g., location in Android 10), it wouldn't surprise me if camera access gets treated in the same way at some point in the future...

@mark-h I'm using repeat mode for time lapse photography, another application where power use needs to be minimised. Is it possible to dim the screen, if not to turn it off altogether?

@mark-h An alternative is to add a black screen overlay above everything, it would in practice turn off LED-based screens pixels. This is the principle used by "Blackr" app. It doesn't, however, turn things off for other types of screens.

      Yes.

Don't forget to set the brightness of the screen to the lowest setting.

If you swipe to bring up the screen.
If you swipe the screen, you can prevent accidental taps.

Mark, thanks for your effort. I need to take hourly pictures for a total of 12. My A51 Android 12 turnes off after 10 minutes and the app stops taking pictures. Please suggest some sort of configurations in order to keep alive app for such a "long" time.
      regards

Google has improved Android OS in such way that recording videos in the background or while the display is OFF is not anymore possible, starting from Android OS v.8. There are apps that do this, in phones that have Android OS v.7.1.2 and earlier, such as the Road Recorder by Pawel Zienowicz, it does it both in background and while the display is OFF.

Not true, the app Quick Video Recorder still works with the screen off on my Android 14. Not on the storage anymore but you can find the APK around.
