there is option to mirror front camera resulting image. i suggest an
idea, to consider, to mirror also on the preview stage, so that it can
be used as a "strange mirror" to look to itself from point of view of
another person. btw there are such separate apps available in play
    market.

I strongly agree. It is an essential feature in an advanced and complex camera app. It is such a nuisance not being able to see how you are (approximately) perceived by others while looking at preview. I can't count how many times a seemingly great looking in preview photo turned out to be absolutely rubbish, when flipped to normal, "non-mirror" version.

Would really appreciate this setting, I do see it's tricky to pull off a performant version of this as Camera 2 API seems to auto mirror for front cameras and you have to a do a matrix transform to achieve this?

yes , ' mirror the preview 'is more important feature than 'mirror the image' , as some of the car android players not support front camera , and in turn they show the mirrored front display , using this feature we can again mirror the mirrored image , and we get the absolute preview of the front car view.

Please implement this feature. I was just looking for a solution to this problem and was unable to find one.

There's no better app to offer this functionality than OpenCamera with its plethora of customization options.

Personally, I think it's silly that this is not provided by Android out of the box. Lack of this option is a nuisance when you want to take a non-mirrored selfie. Without the proper preview it's practically impossible to take one without a lot of extra effort and dealing with perceptual confusion.

Perhaps it's not trivial to implement this from the technical side like others said, but I hope that it's nothing that can't be done.
