Open Camera currently supports JPEG, WebP and PNG.

JPEG XL can losslessy encode JPEGs using only 80% of the original size, and can be much more efficient in lossy encoding (even in “visually lossless” mode, where alternating between the original and compressed images isn’t detectable by humans).
For example, cjxl with default settings and -d 1.0 (visually lossless) on a sample of my own pictures leads to a 4× mean reduction in size compared to JPEG.

It’s also more efficient than WebP, and closer to AVIF.

Despite this, it can be faster to encode and decode than similarly efficient formats, which make it interesting for a camera app.

Of course, this depends on the chosen quality and effort parameters, but the reference implementation has compatibility options with jpeg encoders.

I would also be interested in using JpegXL in OpenCamera.

This would be a killer feature.
    Open Camera is the best!
