The selector for the grid overlay used to be in the "more" menu on the viewfinder screen but now it's hidden away in the settings.

A grid is something which might be enabled/disabled when actually taking a photo or perhaps a different grid might be selected.

I would like to request the control is placed behind an icon on the viewfinder screen.

Just my suggestion.

  Strange, I haven't removed the grid option from that menu so I don't know why it isn't showing. Do you have a screenshot to help me see what's going on?

My mistake. It's still there if I scroll the menu. Sorry for the false alarm!
