Open Camera: Camera app for Android

Open Camera is a new camera app for Android phones/tablets, available now for free on Google Play at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.sourceforge.opencamera .

I created it because none of the existing camera apps worked quite like the way I wanted. Also many I tried were either adware (with often no option to pay to remove them) or paid versions without free versions to try out first. And some miss basic features (e.g., multitouch zoom, or in some cases having zoom at all).

Open Camera has the (optional) feature where the accelerometer is used to rotate the photos so they always appear perfectly level:

The above shows a rather exaggerated example - in practice, you can probably take better photos, but this feature ensures they come out perfectly level, without you having to edit them afterwards in a photo editor. Of course you won't always want this - perhaps you're going for artistic 45-degree shots - so this is an option.

As a left-hander myself, Open Camera's UI can be set to be optimised for left or right handed users.

The on-screen GUI has icons for quick access to common options, whilst less common options are available via the settings.

A full list of features is:

  • Option to auto-stabilise so your pictures are perfectly level no matter what.
  • Zoom via multi-touch gesture and single-touch control.
  • Flash on/off/auto/torch.
  • Choice of focus modes (including macro).
  • Touch to select focus area.
  • Choice of front/back camera.
  • Choose scene modes, color effects and white balance.
  • Choice of camera resolution and JPEG image quality.
  • Video recording (with optional audio).
  • Timer option.
  • Option to silence the shutter (requires Android 4.2).
  • GUI works in any orientation without any pause when changing orientation. Option to optimise for left and right-handed users.
  • Configurable volume keys (to take picture, or zoom).
  • Choice of save location.
  • On-screen display shows remaining device memory, and orientation angle of phone.

Please let me know if you have feature requests or bug reports (either comment here, or in the forums, or creating a ticket).
