The CIF (Crystallographic Information File) format
should be directly supported. More information can be
found at:

http://www.iucr.org/iucr-top/cif/

Validation should be done through the IUCr to ensure
conformance for both read and write to CIF format.

CIF/mmCIF is also supported by JMol.

I have written a Java-based CIFDOM which is included in
JUMBO at cml.sf.net CVS. We have used it for some time and
we believe it has a high degree of conformance. Anyone is
welcome to convert it to C++ - Iif so, please acknowledge
    the source

This is already in the SVN trunk (and recent 2.1. snapshots).

We obviously don't handle all possible CIF files, but do handle a large majority of them.
