You can examine options presented by ./configure --help and disable
functionality you deem unimportant.

Yes, you lose desktop integration (automatic screen resize, cut-and-paste,
drag-and-drop, etc).
You can also try using the version of VMwareTools that comes with the product
and see if it works better for you.
