Hi guys, I am looking to https://github.com/drothlis/open-vm-tools/tree/master/lib/rpcOut and in particular I have interest to use openvm tools in my virtual machine for the watchdog feature. As far as I understood (I hope correctly) vSphere supports this kind of service on host but it is required to install vmware tools. Due the fact that my virtual machine is like a skeleton, I mean that from that many many things are removed for performance purposes, I wish to know if open-vm-tools are sufficient to be used for this kind of functionality I wish (Heartbeat and restart machine in case of loop/etc). In the directories I have seen rpcIn and rpcOut that probably are modules I need for heartbeat, I have interest to know how I can compile just these one and install it on my machine. My virtual machine is not using vmxnet but e1000 driver, could I replace it with e1000 ? Can you help? Thank you very much for clarifications/support :) Prisco |

I have a VM with many virtual NICs on an internal bridge. Those internal vNICs are inaccessible and are only meaningful inside the VM. But, those bridge addresses are shown in vCenter, obscuring the useful addresses. Is there a way to filter out the internal interfaces/addresses, or elevate eth0 so that it is always the primary IP? |

Avinash, > Is there a way to tackle this issue, I tried a lot, but couldn't get anything. Hi,
I am trying to install open-vm-tools in red hat enterprise linux
6.6. It seems that there are no rpms available for them in yum repository.
So I took a look at https://github.com/vmware/open-vm-tools and tried to
build the code. I did "./configure", but it has failed giving me below
error:
checking for libmspack >= 0.0.20040308alpha (via pkg-config)... no
configure: error: mspack >= 0.0.20040308alpha is required.
Is there a way to tackle this issue, I tried a lot, but couldn't get
anything. Any help is highly appreciated.
And one more thing, just curious to know, is open-vm-tools available for
RHEL 6.6?

Alyson, There are no conf file changes required for open-vm-tools. Setting the configuration you have mentioned will confuse the host. So, it is not a good idea. We are working on fixing "3rd Party/Independent". In fact, your should see a different status if you run vSphere 6.0. Thanks, Ravindra From: Alyson Whitaker [mailto:Aly...@me...] Sent: Tuesday, June 02, 2015 1:18 PM To: ope...@li... Subject: Running (3rd Party/Independent) - way to update this? I have been installing the official vmware-tools rpm on all of my RHEL6 servers, and then updating /etc/vmware-tools/tools.conf from true to false: sed -i 's/disable-tools-version=true/disable-tools-version=false/g' /etc/vmware-tools/tools.conf This then shows that vmware-tools is running and updated inside of my vcenter console. For RHEL7 however, we are now being asked to use open-vm-tools, which is perfectly fine and works well. Is there a conf file I can update that will remove the 3rd Party/Independent from the VM console? Is it as simple as adding a tools.conf file? Hello, New to open-vm-tools, just installed it on my gentoo vm hosted on an ESXi 5.0 box. Gentoo linux, up to date, running 3.10.25 kernel with (I think) all necessary config options enabled. After installing, I get an error when starting it: > dinkumthinkum : Sat Feb 01, 09:52:46 : ~ > # /etc/init.d/vmware-tools start > * /tmp/VMwareDnD: correcting mode > * /proc/fs/vmblock/mountPoint: creating directory > * checkpath: mkdir: No such file or directory > * Mounting vmblock ... > mount: mount point /proc/fs/vmblock/mountPoint does not exist [ !! ] > * Starting vmware-tools ... So, is this something to worry about? If so, how do I fix it? If not, how can I make the error go away (or can I)? Thx... :) |
