For some reason OpenSolaris folks decided not to package icu-config with 
either SUNWicu or SUNWicud...

But even if you try suppying CPPFLAGS manually there are files missing (such 
as ucasemap.h), ICU in Solaris is probably too old to be useable.

Did you start from a clean tree (make distclean)? There might be some wrong
dependency somewhere as someone suggested.

I compile open-vm-tools on opensolaris (I'm using 2009.06) regularly and don't
see problems when disabling icu and gtkmm.

Anything to do about this ? It seems, for the first one, that commenting out the struc definition in modules/linux/shared/compat_netdevice.h fixes the problem.

Anything to do about this ? It seems, for the first one, that commenting out the struc definition in modules/linux/shared/compat_netdevice.h fixes the problem.

You want "--without-icu". You can find other options by running "configure --help".

I haven't had time to look at why open-vm-tools don't like the ICU version
shipped with opensolaris.

Presumably a dependency is wrong somewhere; make clean should fix it.  
But if it doesn't try untarring the code again and re-run configure.

- gcc 3.4.5 (Configured with: ../gcc-3.4.5/configure --prefix=/usr --enable-shared --enable-threads=posix --enable-__cxa_atexit --disable-checking --with-gnu-ld --verbose --target=i486-slackware-linux --host=i486-slackware-linux
Thread model: posix
gcc version 3.4.5)

- glibc 2.3.6

- configure line: ./configure --with-kernel-modules --with-kernel-release=2.4.36-soc9-intel --with-linuxdir=/usr/src/linux-2.4.36-soc9-intel --without-gtk2 --without-gtkmm --without-pic --with-gnu-ld --without-x --without-pam --without-procps --without-dnet --without-icu --disable-multimon --disable-docs

I also applied the patch from tichet #2799343.

You're right, the "ifdef" in the makefile is wrong; but we dropped support
for kernels < 2.6.9 on newer releases, so if you really want to compile
that module you could try to apply the change and see if you have better
luck.

The problem is cause by a target in
(SRCDIR)/modules/linux/vsock/Makefile.normal.

88: LINUX_OBJS := af_vsock.o

Line 91 specifies driverLog.o as one of the LINUX_OBJS. However, on line
125 when defining the target for LINUX_OBJS, it specifies this:
$(LINUX_OBJS): %.o: $(SRCROOT)/linux/%.c

Now: all the other files (except driverLog.*) are correctly located into
(SRCDIR)/modules/linux/vsock/linux, so that target is correcly specified.
However, driverLog sources are in (SRCDIR)/modules/linux/shared/

There is a "catch" for driverLog.o at lines 95-101:

I'm the technical lead for the open-vm-tools ports to SCO platforms. SCO

SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V for VMware, its first in the line of virtualized 
versions of its family
of UNIX operating systems (for additional info see

Included in this release is open-vm-tools 2009.06.18-172495. The

This part of the code was pretty much rewritten between the release you're
using and the last one (2009.07.22-179896). I'd recommend trying that one
instead.

I seem to remember a bug in ESX 3.5 where it failed to correctly parse the
open-vm-tools version (TOOLS_VERSION_UNMANAGED). Could you try modifying it in
lib/include/vm_tools_version.h to say "(0x7fffffff - 1)" and see if that helps a
little?

I believe they included the fix in some update of ESX 3.5 (or VC, don't remember
exactly where the problem was), but I don't follow those updates very closely.

(Lenny) running kernel 2.6.26-2 as a ESX 3.5.0 VM and loaded the compiled
modules.
However the ESX server shows still VMware tools "not installed" for the VM.
How can I solve this?

I should have guessed cut and paste, given the filename that wouldn't  
compile! That's a pity.

Yes, although vmware-install.pl works OK, vmware-config-tools.pl  
(7.9.6 build 173382) fails to install the Xorg modules because the  
version of Xorg in OpenSolaris is 7.5.1, and the tools can only handle  
Xorg <= 7.1. AIUI the tools really don't work even if you install them  
manually/cheat with symlinks.

Is there a particular reason you are trying to use OVT versus the shipped 
version of tools?
