Hi everybody. Some questions for you: VMware 6.5.1 modules do not compile on kernel 2.6.29 anymore, thus breaking execution of VMware on systems running latest kernels. Is there already an update available (at some place?) The modules to be installed on a guest and host are almost identical. the open-vm-tools are targetted to be installed on a guest. They have been updated already to support kernel 2.6.29. How much of an effort would it be to have open-vm-tools adopted to also be able to run on the HOST? What additions need to be done? Havint the open-vm-tools also available for the host part could eliminate users running into an updated kernel without having the proper kernel modules available anymore. On openSUSE (and SLE) for example, if the kernel modules are also installed by the package manager, you get a warning about future missing modules if you go for installing the updated kernel. Thus warning / informing the user well in advance. Updated module packages could be provided by distributions together with the updated kernel (same as done now for open-vm-tools, targeted at the guest systems). Dominique |
