backdoor interface question

Hello community!

I've got a question (probably a dumb one) about the backdoor interface used in open vm
tools.

The question is - where are backdoor interface specs published? Are
they open? I mean how VMWare let us know
how we have to communicate with virtualware?

Okay, now for some reason
this magic asm stuff with those magic constants work, but who can
guarantee that it will remain to be compatible with newer VMWare
versions?

Maybe I've just missed something.
