Use typedefs for the handler functions and split them out to individual handlers for each backend. Could conceivably split them to separate source files then.

I've assigned this ticket to Joe Robbins, as he currently does his fileio-rewrite (that splits the handlers into separate source files, along many other changes, too) that will likely to be in GNU Cobol 2.1 (he's rebasing the changes to current sources and has a branch here for this project).
If you're interested in this fileio-rewrite you can have a look at the old project (based on OpenCOBOL 1.1 release).
@JoeRobbins: Please check if there is anything in this patch/thought that could be useful for your rewrite. And report back as I'd change the ticket accordingly.
Hi, thanks for that pointer. I was reading the fileiorewrite branch in SVN but it looks like I should wait for the rest of that to be merged.
