ist there any way how I can estimate the network size (rough estimation
is enough) based on the information a local node has.
E.g. can I try to estimate the size based on the entries in the
references? I know, that when the references are full it will be
impossible to estimate further growth of the network, but until then?

So I have no answer.
Here some things I think you must consider if you want to use the
finger table as basis for an estimation:
- - The finger table is not guaranteed to be accurate.
- - References in it are randomly fixed by the FixFingerTask.
- - The finger table only covers references to other peers that cover the
half of the identifier space starting from the current peers identifier.
