I've got an idea for the sky hack rendering. It seems so obvious!
1. Material for the sky faces will be totally transparent. Thus no
texture will get rendered.

2. Do a two pass rendering. Sky polygons first, then the rest of the

Water hack remains to be solved thus. (I'm on the track to this one
too... Generally the water polygons are there [untransparent now], so
sorting the rendering of the cells far-to-near should be sufficient)
I'll try to commit the speed corrected renderer in a few days, if I'll
be in luck and will have time to write the code. I'm in the process of
thinking it up (last pieces to be solved)...
