Presumably, if you're writing the program you won't use variables with the same name as a column name.  I just would never use stems in this situation.
 
It is certainly possible to add some extra characters to the column name.  The "!" character was used a lot in earlier ooRexx.  These are the kind of changes I would hope to do now before things go much farther.
