This release brings major improvements to libomniEvents - the shared library version of omniEvents. There is a new example program (channel.cc) that illustrates how to use libomniEvents to build an EventChannel inside your own program.

Several crashing bugs have been fixed. There are numerous other bugfixes, including fixes specific to AIX, HP-UX and SGI builds.

Wolfgang Borgert had kindly packaged omniEvents for Debian Linux. The package name is 'omnievents'. You can find it in Debian's 'testing' distribution:

Thanks to Wolfgang for his contribution.

This release fixes a bug in the ProxyPullConsumer implementation, and improves support for using omniEvents as a shared library. RPM and pkg-config files are now provided, to help packaging efforts.

I am proud to announce omniEvents 2.6.0, the culmination of nearly a year's development and testing.

omniEvents 2.6.0 is an almost entirely new implementation of the OMG Event Service Specification v1.1 for omniORB. This new version offers greatly improved stability and performance, fault-tolerance, federated event channels and event type filtering. It also runs as a daemon/service.

omniEvents nows runs as a service on Windows. Precompiled binaries are
available for Windows. The command-line interface is easier to use, and now
supports arbitrary naming service names.

Important Note. A couple of the changes break backwards compatibility:

1. Command line option '-s' is no longer supported. Use '-p' if you need to
change the default port from 11169.

2. Default naming service name has changed.
'EventChannelFactory.EventChannelFactory' is now 'EventChannelFactory'.
To restore the previous default, start with this option:

omniEvents' README file has been getting longer and longer recently. I've even added a short tutorial on writing Event Service clients.

omniEvents nows runs as a daemon on Unix platforms. Channels can now be 'filtered' so that they only allow one event type to propagate. Federated event channels are now supported. A new 'real time' mode improves push-push delivery times.

omniEvents can now be used without a Naming Service. Objects are
located with CORBA URIs instead. Basic redundancy between two
`live' servers is now supported.

Comprehensive updated examples are now available in C++, Python &
Java. Documentation on how to write an Event Service client has
been added to the README.

Development on the Event Service 1.1 version of omniEvents continues. This release adds a more scalable persistency file format, and better
examples, including new Java examples.

This is the first testing release of a new POA implementation of the OMG Event Services Specification v1.1 for omniORB. It builds upon the foundation of omniEvents v2.4. omniEvent's reliance on the old BOA architecture has been a serious impediment to developing further features. This release implements all of the basic Event Service features of omniEvents 2.4.

Windows binaries only work with the version of omniORB for which they were built. omniEvents 2.4.0 binaries are now available for omniORB4.0.3 and 4.0.2.

Windows users are advised to use the newer version, as 4.0.3 fixes an annoying bug that prevents omniORB from reading the registry:

omniEvents has been ported to an Autoconf build environment.
It now builds `out of the box' on Windows2000, AIX, Solaris,
Tru64/Alpha, HP-UX11 and Linux. Windows binaries are available as a separate download.

The new release preserves the exact functionality of 2.1.2, in
order to keep changes in the build system separate from
functional changes. There have been some minor changes to the text of error messages, in order to enhance usability.... read more

The new autoconf build system now works on Windows. Binaries are available as a separate download.

Autoconf detection of omniORB and omniidl is now more reliable, especially on machines with more than one version of omniORB installed.

Please download this release and test the build system, and the Windows binaries. Once I'm happy that there are no problems this will become stable release 2.4.

omniEvents has been ported to an autoconf build
environment. It now builds `out of the box' on AIX,
Solaris, Tru64/Alpha, HP-UX11 and Linux. Everything
seems to work pretty well, but it's not yet ready for
a public release. There are two main reasons for
this...

1. I've not been able to test it on Windows. In fact
I'm certain that I must have broken the Windows
compatibility, even if only a little. I'm keen to
preserve Windows compatibility, but I haven't used
Visual Studio for years. I'm hoping someone else will
help me out.... read more
