You should check out and in to the appropriate branch for the kernel version
you are using. Trunk is not meant to be used by anyone but the project
maintainer.

The current version may be found in branches under 2.6.22

The patches directory is meant to be applied to a vanilla 2.6.22 kernel. I 
recommend you download it from kernel.org. After you have compiled your kernel,
you will probably want to migrate processes or create a cluster.

You should consider using the simple to use cluster daemon omuscd:
