No

When searching for specific characters the expanded versions of these chars are matched as well, e.g. a search for
– LATIN SMALL LIGATURE OE (\u0153 as used in French) will find a literal 'oe' as well
– LATIN SMALL LETTER SHARP S (\u00DF as used in German) will match any literal 'ss' as well
– LATIN SMALL LETTER THORN (\u00FE as used in Icelandic) will find any literal 'th' as well

I'm using Olifant with a German Win XP

Possible workaround: searching for these chars with the regex option enabled suppresses this behaviour.

Could this be a side effect of the SQL engine?
