don't know what to say at all about the lo-poly objects.
as for all that extra polygons, that's something wierd with OGLE and those games that doesn't happen with other apps, such as WoW, SecondLife, VirtuallyJenna, etc.

I extra install Doom 3, to capture some Models.

In captered Shader Files i read something about Texture Deforming.
Thats Displacementmaps.
Also i see, there a lot of mess

but doom3 have low poly models that use normalmaps to look high poly :)

Also, the extra polys can be removed. Change your D3 settings. I'd tell you what to set, but I've forgotten. Play with it a bit.
