    Dear all,

I am new to octave as a whole and try to install octplot. I have octave 3.0.1 on a Ubuntu 9.04 desktop. While I'm not sure that I try to do the right thing, if I run

    octplot_enable

from the src directory, I get the following error message

error: Octplot was compiled for a different version of Octave
error: evaluating if command near line 40, column 3
error: evaluating if command near line 28, column 1
error: near line 54 of file `/home/peter/octplot-0.4.0/src/octplot_enable.m'

    If I try

    pkg install octplot-0.4.0.tar.gz

    then I get the message

error: package is missing file: DESCRIPTION
error: called from `pkg:verify_directory' in file /usr/share/octave/3.0.1/m/pkg/pkg.m near line 1602, column 7

    can you please help?
    thank you and best regards,
    Peter

octplot checks the precise version of Octave it was built against. Your best bet is to change the check in octplot_enable.m.

However, octplot is pretty much dead. Its author is involved in the graphics system of Octave itself. So I suggest that you don't even start with octplot at all and try Octave 3.2 and its fltk backend. For questions about that, go to Octave's user mailing list.

It sounds like you did not install the octplot package from the Ubuntu repository. Ubuntu 9.04 has the packages octplot 0.4.0-7build1 and octave 1:3.0.1-6ubuntu2.

I had the same error in Ubuntu 11.04, 64 bit. Turns out I needed to install the octave headers. In Ubuntu this is:

    sudo apt-get install octave3.2-headers

Then I received errors about fltk2, which was fixed by installing:

    sudo apt-get install libfltk1.1-dev

    Then freetype error:

    sudo apt-get install libfreetype6-dev

    Then glu.h error:

    sudo apt-get install libglu1-mesa-dev

At this point I was still getting some odd GL errors on specific function calls and gave up. Hopefully this helps someone else though.

octave-config needs to be installed. Use

    sudo apt-get install octave3.2-headers
