i bet you never thought you'd see this mail, did you? neither did i. in fact, i was in the middle of the final sentence of this message when the power went out a few minutes ago. so now i'm rewriting it, dreading what's going to happen next to prevent me from getting this out. sheesh. anyway, it's out! the libraries, the command line tools, the 3D paint program... it's all there, released under the GPL. finally. we're calling it a "Sample Implementation" because it's all code that came from the research. it's not in a state meant for commercial or production use. it's buggy and messy. there are README and INSTALL and TODO files to explain the state, how to use it, and where we'd like to take it, but as far as documentation goes, that's it. what we'd like to do is get the libraries and API cleaned up, and re-released under an open source license that allows them to be used in commercial products. the details of that plan are all in the release itself. the code is available at SourceForge. you can get to the sourceforge project most easily via the Octex homepage: http://www.thrownclear.com/octex you'll also note that the Thrown Clear site and the Octex page are both in a state of disarray at the moment. we're trying to get them working again, but we thought it was important to get the code out first, considering how long it's been since we said we'd release it. sorry about that. please keep discussion of the sample implementation on the octex-lib-dev list. thanks! - grue |

well, I am interested in implementing octree textures in Houdini's Vmantra as a commercial plugin. There was talk some time ago about making a paint package that works with them, but I have heard nothing. I could partner up with Tom Benoit at Amazon paint, if he's interested, or I could create a system based on film gimp. Is there a single solitary soul at all interested in this subject other than me? am I the only one on this mailing list? It sure is lonely on the cutting edge. -Ivan |
