Yes, I had just tried this and found it to work OK.  However I don't really 
consider it to be a general solution.  No complaints though... it works and 
I'm gladly using it.

It appears we think alike.  I've got a local vtp_printlatex file which does 
basically that.  (actually grep -v fontsize)  Ideally this would all be 
controlled within octaviz, but like I said I'm not complaining, it works.  
I'm sure there are more important things to work on.
