Thanks for your responses, clearly this isn't just a problem that I have. Going on a response I got back in Jan, it looks like it is a problem confined to the 64 bit openjdk packages. Is that an upstream problem i.e. something the openjdk maintainers can/should fix? Cheers, -- Regards, Terry Duell |

No, it means the package has not been loaded yet. The default setting for most packages has been recently changed to Autoload: no The link that Carnë sent in his email explains why having too many "autoload" packages is not a good idea. From the output you showed, openmpi_ext seems to have been installed correctly on your system, you just need to load it. To this end do: pkg load openmpi_ext to test whether it works correctly, set the environment variables NUMBER_OF_MPI_NODES and HOSTFILE before running Octave and then do: pkg load openmpi_ext demo helloworld Thanks again for your feedback. No. It means it's no loaded. Run "pkg load openmpi_ext". Packages need to be loaded for use. This is a feature, see http://wiki.octave.org/FAQ#How_do_I_install_all_octave_packages.3F why (not exact question but related). Carnë |

I did not knowingly introduce anything that would make this release incompatible with Octave 3.2.4 what exactly is the problem you get in installing? It would be helpful if you could try installing with the "-verbose" option enabled pkg install -verbose openmpi_ext-1.1.0.tar.gz and send me the output > Since Ubuntu 12.04 does not yet have > Octave 3.6 (unofficial version does exist), I could not test it on > 3.6. > > The next release of Ubuntu will happen in October and will include > 3.6.2. I will probably wait for this release. You don't need to wait for a new Ubuntu release to get newer binaries for Ubuntu you could just use one of the links listed here: http://wiki.octave.org/Octave_for_GNU/Linux#Unofficial_binaries > Best regards, > Sukanta c. |

I am not sure what the correct solution is (changing > the package policy for openjdk, creating the symbolic link when the > octave forge java package is installed, changing the source code of the > of java package). This always seems to be the case in 64 bit systems (AFAIK also on Windows 64b). If it gives some comfort: on Mac OSX it is worse. The Java libs and executables have been scattered all over the place there and often seem to be moved into other locations with new OSX version. Anyway, Michael (Java package maintainer) is the one to give advice here. I recently committed a preinstall.m to svn that looks for the executables and the jvm lib in the known places and aborts the Java pkg installation if they cannot be found. That helps in the sense that unwary users are not left with Java package installations that didn't yield errors but in fact are still half-baked. I did think of having the script add the relevant symlink automatically (AFAIK it is only needed for the jvm library) but in many situations one needs to have admin/root credentials for that. I think I left this option out as I'm not sure if fooling around in the system setup is the right thing to do for ordinary users, let alone user application scripts. But I could amend it to at least warn if the symlink is needed but the user doesn't have the required privileges; perhaps that is already in place anyway, I forgot. > Anyway I think this discussion should go to octave forge where the java > package is maintained not to the octave helper list, I put the > corresponding dev list on CC and would think that from the next reply on > hel...@oc... should be removed from CC. In the mean time if you are in a hurry, you can download the package (and the html help files) directly from the tracker. To dowload the development version, go to this link: <http://octave.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/octave/trunk/octave-forge/main/openmpi_ext/?view=tar> and save the file as "openmpi_ext.tar.gz" then use "pkg install -verbose openmpi_ext.tar.gz" from within Octave to install the package. I'd be very interested, if you can still see the problem, to use your help in order to fix it. Please remember to uninstall any previous versions you already have installed before installing this one. Thanks, c. |

Hello everyone, I was trying to make Forge version of openmpi_ext work on Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 with no success. I tried both automated installation with "pkg install" and manually by following README in that package (with custom compiled openmpi-1.3.3). In any case I got segfaults just by executing example scripts: $ mpirun -np 4 octave --eval helloworld GNU Octave, version 3.2.4 Copyright (C) 2009 John W. Eaton and others. This is free software; see the source code for copying conditions. There is ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY; not even for MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. For details, type `warranty'. Octave was configured for "x86_64-pc-linux-gnu". Additional information about Octave is available at http://www.octave.org. ..... ..... We are at rank 0 that is master etc.. Greetings from process: 1! We are at rank 0 that is master etc.. Greetings from process: 2! We are at rank 0 that is master etc.. Greetings from process: 3! *** glibc detected *** octave: corrupted double-linked list: 0x00000000028e4420 *** *** glibc detected *** octave: corrupted double-linked list: 0x0000000002a69620 *** *** glibc detected *** octave: corrupted double-linked list: 0x000000000121d620 *** Any help is appreciated -- Dmitry S. We use bottom posting see http://www.idallen.com/topposting.html ). Also, note that this is the Octave-Forge project, we develop packages for Octave, not the actual Octave core.
