As you have probably seen, it is a bug in GNU make, apparently fixed by
the upstream author already (cf
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/help-make/2006-01/msg00005.html).  The
fix will appear in the forthcoming release of GNU make and I gave up on
making the changes in CVS.
