Just to round up this issue, the problem was a change in mkoctfile in 
2.1.54 where SH_LDFLAGS was changed to DL_LDFLAGS. Due to this change
the necessary linker flag to build the *.dll.a file wasn't being passed
to the linker..

I've committed a patch, that James confirms fixes the problem for him..
