The use of swap_4_bytes was introduced in R2004-02-12 to allow saving
of binary files.. Does this mean that comm and fixed haven't been building 
on OS X since then? I don't see how octave itself can build in that case
since swap_4_bytes was used in data-conv.cc in octave itself...

If it doesn't work for 2.1.55 there is no fundamental reason it would
work with 2.1.58...
