I just verified that this occurs with both Octave 2.1.57 and 2.1.58, using 
octave-forge CVS. But it doesn't occur using the octave-forge .deb package 
for Octave 2.1.57.  I haven't made any changes myself in the minimization 
files, except for the argument checking added yesterday. So before I start 
trying to figure this out, does anyone have ideas as to what the problem 
might be? Thanks, Michael
