Aalib is a library that allows SDL to display graphics in text only
environement by using 'ascii-art'. Is doesn't look as good as in graphics,
but You can play games with it. (http://aa-project.sourceforge.net)
While building SDL you have the option --enable-video-aalib which is not
enabled by default, but most distributions use it (eg. debian)
