> 3. We would like to add a series of traits related to herbicide tolerance (definitions in parentheses):
"herbicide tolerance" ("tolerance to label field application rates of herbicide, with little or no phenotypic effect and no effect on agronomic yield"), subsumed by the following 3 trait subcategories;
"glyphosate tolerance" ("tolerance to label field application rates of glyphosate, with little or no phenotypic effect and no effect agronomic yield");
"glufosinate tolerance ("tolerance to label field application rates of glufosinate, with little or no phenotypic effect and no effect on agronomic yield");
"acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitor tolerance ("tolerance to label field application rates of herbicides of the acetolactate synthase inhibitor class, with little or no phenotypic effect and no effect on agronomic yield").

Pankaj:
Do you thing a generic definition like thsi would work:
--An assay to determine the tolerance to the applied XXX-herbicide of a plant or a group of plants (population).
Do you really want to add ..with little or no phenotypic effect and no effect on agronomic yield.
There is already a phenotype (...tolerance ) so we cant say little or no.
Thsi is okay to say : The herbicide application may not affect the agronomic yield.

I don't think "an assay..." is appropriate because this is a trait not an assay. I understand your concept about the trait being a continuum (i,e. susceptible, moderately resistant, etc..) so I would propose simply "response to an applied herbicide or mixture of herbicides by single plants or populations."

Trait is something that one assays whereas the continuum (i,e.
susceptible, moderately resistant, etc..) are the phenotype values that one records. These are not traits.
e.g. leaf color is a trait name that one assays to find teh color of the leaf. The leaf color pale is the phenotype.
That is why I have in the definition
...assay to determine the sensitivity (tolerance or susceptibility) exhibited by a plant or a group of plants (population) towards the applied herbicide
