Hi All,

We have received requests for additional terms describing EMG abnormalities. I admit to this being out of my area of expertise, so I leave it in your hands to determine the appropriateness.

  1. Under [HP:0003457] EMG abnormality, at present there exists [HP:0003403] EMG: decremental response of compound muscle action potential (CMAP) to repetitive nerve stimulation. We have received a request for a new supra-term for HP:0003403, being "Repetitive nerve stimulation abnormality" (Abnormality observed when nerve studied is electrically stimulated six to ten times at 2 or 3 Hertz). Under this new term, "Post-exercise facilitation" (Reduction in (Repair of) decrement after exercise observed on repetitive nerve stimulation; synonym: Post-tetanic potentiation) and "Post-exercise exhaustion" (Post exercise appearance, or exacerbation, of decremental response observed on repetitive nerve stimulation).

  2. At term specifically for "Positive sharp waves" This is grouped under the definition for [HP:0003482] EMG: axonal abnormality but not specific to its own term. Definition: These are spontaneous firing action potentials stimulated by needle movement of an injured muscle fiber. There is propagation to, but not past, the needle tip. This inhibits the display of the negative deflection of the waveform.

  3. A term for "single fiber EMG abnormalities", a technique that is a selective EMG recording technique that allows identification of action potentials (APs) from individual muscle fibers.
Definition: Abnormality in single fiber EMG recording

In continuation of this discussion, there have also been requests for abnormalities observed on EMG studies using the following techniques:
    1) Cold Immersion
    2) Long exercise testing (synonym: McManis testing)
    3) Short exercise testing

I have create most of the terms mentioned above. I wonder whether these two terms are ideal: "Post-exercise facilitation" and "Post-exercise exhaustion". It seems to me these are more or less normal phenomena, and in general the HPO terms should characterize something as being abnormal. I am not entirely sure about the correct definitions here, please open up a new term request for these two.
